Research Mentoring Program for Minority Scholars
In early 2010, a call for applications was announced for the third year of the NCRECE Research Mentoring Program for Minority Scholars. The focus of this fellowship program is secondary analysis of existing data sets that can be used to address issues of importance in the field of early childhood education, applied developmental psychology, child development, and related fields.
The NCRECE Fellows have access to large-scale, nationally representative data sets and an ongoing year long association with senior investigators who provide mentorship in writing articles for publication. The available data sets are: NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development and NCEDL SWEEP.
In 2010-11, fellowships were awarded to:

- Dr. Nicole Gardner-Neblett, Investigator, University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (mentor: Bridget Hamre)
- Dr. Jamaal Matthews, Assistant Professor, Education Psychology, Montclair State University (mentor: Amanda Williford)
- Dr. Amanda Sullivan, Assistant Professor, School Psychology, Arizona State University (mentor: Sam Field)
In 2009-2010, fellowships were awarded to:
- Dr. Sandra Barrueco, Assistant Professor, Psychology, The Catholic University of America (mentor: Amanda Williford)
- Dr. Madlene Hamilton, Postdoctoral Fellow, Center for Race, Religion and Urban Life, Rice University (mentor: Sam Field)
- Dr. Kay Sanders, Assistant Professor, Child Development, Whittier College (mentor: Jason Downer)
- Dr. Gabriela Simon-Cereijido, Assistant Professor, Speech-Language Pathology, California State University-Los Angeles (mentor: Carollee Howes)
In 2008/2009, fellowships were awarded to:
- Dr. Scott Graves, Assistant Professor of School Psychology, Bowling Green State University (mentor: Carollee Howes)
- Dr. Toni Harris, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Virginia State University (mentor: Peg Burchinal)
- Dr. Zewelanji Serpell, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Virginia State University (mentor: Andy Mashburn)
- Dr. Karen Watkins-Lewis, Adjunct Faculty, Bowie State University and University of Maryland University College (mentor: Bridget Hamre)
Financial support includes a stipend of $12,000 over 12 months to cover research expenses and travel funds to attend conferences and meet with mentors.
